One hundred families on the Horamula estate in Rakwana in the Ratnapura District were provided dry rations under an initiative of the Rakwana Local Inter Religious Committee in collaboration with Godakawela Divisional Secretariat and NPC partner’s organization, Environment and Community Development Centre.
The Rakwana area consists of many tea estates. Tea factories have been closed so workers have not been able to do their jobs due to the curfew imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and as a result, they are unable to feed their families.
The Divisional Secretary of Godakawela said the donation of dry rations had helped to ease the burden of the estate workers. “I did not expect such a quick response from the National Peace Council. This goes beyond ordinary NGO work,” she said.
